Silk Wefted Fine Antique Mohtashem Kashan 134 x 206cm / 4'5" x 6'9"

£18,000

A very rare and beautiful rug with superb wool pile and silk wefts which give it an amazing texture. The colours are extremely unusual and consist of a pale brown background, almost like camel, with caramel corners and a lovely sky blue border. Purple silk selvedge, partially and expertly repaired otherwise the condition is outstanding. A really great rug that will enhance your world and should be displayed prominently on a wall or table.

Kashan is a city in Central Iran, then known as Persia, and the special workshop set up there to weave extra fine and special pieces was named 'Mohtashem' after the master weaver. These exceptional pieces are easily recognisable for their luminescent wool, incredible fineness and the purple silk selvedges. I have never encountered one with silk wefts before, putting this beautiful rug into a very limited category.
