Early 19th century Melas 3'9" x 5'8" / 113 x 173cm
Some of you may remember I had listed this piece a few months ago and it was marked as 'Sold'. Well, I bought it back and have had the sides and corners professionally restored. The rug looks fantastic now and can be displayed on your wall or used on the floor in a low traffic area. The ground colour of soft coral is a very striking and attractive colour; the complementary colours fire off it to great effect, the light blue, pale yellow and aubergine.
The Melas is a distant relative of what we call 'Transylvanian' rugs which were made in the same villages and although this one is made approximately three centuries later, signs of its ancient pedigree are there,in the large reciprocal main border and the floral elements in the field. Also, looking at the weave, even after all this time, they have strong similarities.
With corroded out blacks the piece is in nonetheless excellent condition for the age, with a shimmering, velvety knap.
Occasionally I also do a home trial, numerous factors can vastly change how a piece looks and feels in a room. Get in touch for more information
