Mid 19th C Bokhara Suzani 158 x 231cm / 5'2" x 7'7"
£12,500
These embroideries were meant as dowries but are really so much more than that. The demonstration of skill with the needle (suzani) represents the bride-to-be's value as a skilled worker, and a well executed suzano is truly a moving and beautiful object. This example has all the things you look for in a good embroidery; Energetic animation of the flowers, beautiful natural dyes and excellent condition. Here we see the 'Ascending flower' design worked to perfection with two vines climbing the field issuing flowers alternately on forest green stems. Plenty of variety in the shades of brick and wine red, with a good sprinkling of light blue amongst the green vines to give this delightful embroidery an additional lift.
